1980s Rickenbacker cases

Post by PunchyStrummer »

Hi everyone,

What does everyone think about Rickenbacker cases from around the 1980s? Has the outside appearance of a vintage case (besides the colour) but a moulded interior for the body similar to the new SKB cases as well as a case picket with a cover :D
Rick-en-back-er. It's just so fun to say, let alone play.

Those are my favorite! They hug the guitar better than later G&G cases (the silver type), but still look like the old style cases. Bonus points if it’s black/black interior (instead of the blue).

Were the black inside/outside cases common?

For a certain number of years, I think so, yes.

Same here. I’ve bought and traded with RRF folks to get as many of these as I can.

I have a dream of order a bunch (as few as they are willing to make) of these from G&G. Because the gear budget is running quite low it’s just a dream for now. No idea how much they would be, especially with shipping and taxes to Norway.

All three of my instruments are early-80's and have the black Tolex cases. They have done just fine for me all these decades.

I'm sure somebody will correct me here, but I think they started the black/black G&G style cases around 1987 and continued through the early 90s. I've seen Black/Blue cases as early as 1991 or 1992. So these weren't available in that color combo for more than 4-5 years.

I've never seen a silver tolex style case that wasn't the "open square" shape, instead of fitted to the 330/360 body cutout.

I had a May 1991 with blue interior, if that helps.

I have been fortunate enough to acquire a few of these great form-fitting black Tolex cases over the years. Some with black and some with blue interiors. I may still have a couple in my storage unit.

G&G will make a single case for you. I know this because I have actually ordered a single case from them about 5 years ago.
Seems to me it was around $300US. No idea what shipping would be, I lived in the US then...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I wanted to revive this thread because I was fortunate enough to get new silver vintage-style cases for my '95 360S-12 and my '80 620-12. These are being special-ordered by Winfield Vintage, and have deep blue plush, form-fitted to the bodies (tightly). They also have black leather ends and handles. I consider these to be the best of all worlds, and are reasonable priced at $249. I found them on Reverb.

As requested. I also added the 620-12 so you could see just how well these cases fit.
