'Mersey Beat' (the paper). The Odd Spot.

Post by miguel »

'The Odd Spot' was a popular club in Liverpool, around 1961 to 1963. This ad is from 'Mersey Beat' Vol 1. Nº 21, May 3 to May 17 1962. The club closed for a while shortly after this add appeared, for some renovations, which took place during July 1962 and part of August. Then, for the reopening (the second ad) they booked The Beatles. This reopening add was published in 'Mersey Beat' Vol 2, Nº 28, August 9 to August 23 1962.

Miguel: One of my favourite Odd Spot Club photos is posted in an articel I wrote with regard to John McNally's Hofner Club 60 guitar. You can see the photo by scrolling down at this page. Note the artwork on the walls behind the stage have a definite jazz appeal. This is also one of the few photos of Johnny Sandon and The Searchers from 1961.

I also notice the advertisement for Faron and the Flamingos, another great Liverpool group. At the risk of one shameless plug too many, here is a short article of Faron and the Flamingos. Information from Faron indicates that he prefers the name "Farons' Flamingos."

I had read your article, Peter! In fact, I read it long before becoming a member of this Forum! The photo is great. Seems that the 'Odd Spot' was mixing jazz and rock and roll shows, like the early 'Cavern'. The people I have talked about clubs in Liverpool say that the 'Odd Spot' was very popular. Some groups went there to have a cup of coffee or a drink after a gig.

Faron´s Flamingos were a very good band. I understand that, for a while, in 1963, they were the next Liverpool group who was to reach national success. Sadly, that never happened.

Just one more thing, not related with the 'Odd Spot' nor with Faron, but interesting: Bill Harry, the publisher of 'Mersey Beat', wrote me yesterday to say that he too had bid at the auction where I got the 11 original 'Mersey Beat' issues from which I´m taken those clippings. It seems that Bill himself doesn´t have six of the eleven issues auctioned!

Here is a nice photo of Faron with several Beatles in 1961 at the New Brighton Tower.
