The Shadows and Burns Guitars

Post by admin »

Living in Canada, I have seldom had the opportunity to see a Burns guitar, let alone play one. The Burns' version used by Hank Marvin seems to have closely resembled the three pickup Fender Stratocaster played by him - three single coil pickups, rosewood fret board and 22 frets. At the same time, I am reminded of many innovative features introduced by Jim Burns including
"Such Burns-originated features include the heel-less, glued-in neck; 24-fret fingerboard, knife-edge bearing vibrato unit; active electronics and stacked-coil pickups."
I have read that Hank Marvin used the Burns from 1964 to 1970 in many of his recordings, not the least of which was The Rise and Fall of Fingel Bunt. I would realy like to know more about that title, but I digress.

I understand that Hank Marvin stopped using the Burns' model after it was stolen from him around 1970. It is hard to believe that he did not replace this model that formed such a significant part of his earlier playing period.

I am hoping that Goran might have some information in this regard. This question actually crossed my mind in an earlier post from Goran in which he expressed that it was possible to get a fairly close Burns' sound with a Stratocaster.

"...not the least of which was The Rise and Fall of Fingel Blunt."

LOL... Actually, Peter, it's Flingel Bunt.

Perhaps Bob Marley did a "Blunt" version... ;-)

Here's the Shadows playing Flingel Bunt. The pity is... you can't hear Hank!

Here's a short clip of the Shads where you CAN hear Hank.

Not a clue (about Flingel Bunt)... unless it was the Shadows' answer to the Stones' "Nanker Phelge." LOLOL

I thought this version of Savage was brilliant.

You need to hear Steve Stevens version though.

The narrator's "upper-crust British scorn" makes me chuckle.

Andrew: Just a fantastic interview with Hank and some nice comments from Randy Bachman as well which will interest Canadian music enthusiasts.
