Why Did Hank Move To Australia?

Postby (admin) » Sat Aug 18, 2007 12:10 pm

While Australia seems like a great place to live, I am wondering why Hank Marvin chose to move from the UK? Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I don't know the reason for the move, Peter but of the major cities in Australia, Perth certainly has one of the best climates. It's also a very popular starting point for British tourists and many choose to stay there - especially the financially challenged...... it used to cost a small fortune to get to the east coast!

It's not a big city and perhaps he chose Perth for the sake of relative anonymity.

When I was there a couple of years ago I was amazed at the number of pommie accents.

Strangely enough, there seems to be little information known about Hank's personal life, much more about Bruce's. Could it have something at all to do with him becoming religious?

How long has he been living in Australia? According to this interview, Hank was "becoming religious" quite a while ago... even discussing religion with Cliff Richard.

Maybe he likes being near Chris Kinman... ;-)

Hank Marvin lives in Perth with his second wife who he married about 1972, he has as I understand it 4 children from his first marriage, he has 2 from his second marriage.

He first got interested in religion about 71 through someone who dropped leaflets into his house in Devon where he lived at one time, it was his wife Carole who expressed an interest in finding out more about JW's., though I do believe Brian Locking who was on bass on Shadows second album was an influence too.

In 97 there was some adverse publicity towards HM when his oldest son by his first marriage Dean, who Marvin had wrote a tune for called Dean's Theme years previously, was found dead in a hostel for the homeless.

Dean Marvin had a public falling out with his father and in some quarters apparently was quoted as saying some derogatory things about HMM, basically implying that his public profile and his personal profile are entirely different.

They never spoke again I understand, there were headlines in British papers such as "Millionaire Hank Marvin's son found dead in hostel for homeless".

There has always been little mention of his first family.

Clearly I don't know and his fans none us know a celebrity really at all.

I have met Hank twice and both he and Bruce were very natural and also Brian, no airs or graces.

Some say who probably don't know that the big fallout was something to do with religion, in fact I think Hank and Bruce drifted apart because of it.
