Pickup coverage question

Post by ram »

Just thinking here (I know a very dangerous thing). Can a bass pickup with four poles work with five strings? Is it a general field across the connector or a much more localized field at the poles that make things happen??? Would a HS be different from a HG in the scenario?

Along the same lines.... Sergio, can you take a reissue horseshoe pickup and make a 5 string bobbin to replace the 4 string bobbin and then reassemble it so that it looks like it came that way?

Tom, I don't think it would work as good as a 6 pole guitar pickup would. RIC 5 strings came with a toaster in the neck which have 6 poles. So neck or bridge (or both) would benefit from 6 pole pickups.

Dane, I would think that would be easy for Sergio. Maybe he'll drop by soon to answer you.

Rods on the HS bobbin are Ø5/16” I believe (measured mine to Ø7.87mm).

Mouser.com has some Ø7.5mm alnicos (the ones I got measured Ø7.37mm)

Doesn’t say what grade these are, but the specs seems to be alnico 5
