Experience with Valco or Res O Glass guitars?

Post by Dom »

I've been drooling over old fiberglass Valco guitars for eons...anyone had 'one? I can't afford an original, but I love that sound! I want to build an all out slide guitar & have been considering one of the res o glass kits they call the Belmont. It was the body shape seen on the Sahara, Val Trol, Towne & Country, tremolectric etc. To my eyes that body looks VERY similar to the combo 600/800, as if Paul Barth was involved in the design. I know he did work for National, but I thought it was before Electro string. The original Valco sold guitars were wood & hogged out on a drill press from the back just like the Combos were. I have an electro lap steel that sounds great but never gets used. Been thinking I could use the pickup from the lappy, use a bass trebble pickup surround & make a res o glas kit look similar to a Ric combo...right pickguard, toaster, cloverfield green, 450 style bridge...or finally a bigsby in my life? Thoughts?
