Best '60's Garage Compilations

Okay, I figured I'd start this here so that maybe a good resource of classic garage band material could be put together for those interested. Odds are if you've been around CD's and albums of music from the '60's, then you've heard of Nuggets. It's basically the gold standard for the '60's garage band/proto-punk material. There have been a couple of variations on this, with the box set, Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, being the most complete incarnation of the most definitive tracks of this sub-genre. The sequel, Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond, features tracks from all around the world and is a great companion piece to the first set. Nuggets didn't mine all of the great material out of this area though. Sundazed Records, who seem to have taken over where Rhino left off, has put together a series of discs called Garage Beat '66. So far there are 6 of these that have been released, but each one is very well done. All of the tracks are of superior quality and could have been on the Nuggets set from Rhino had there been room. Are there any compilations in this area of music that you've found that are worth recommending?

Recommended Listening:
Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Age
Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond
Garage Beat '66 series

Right off the top of my head.
"Back from the grave" series — great compilation of bands most of which are completely forgotten. Good if you manage to get them on CD (and i hope it's possible if you live in US), i only managed to get them on cassettes, with bonus tracks from Chicago garage bands — still haven't found out which compilation they were taken from, maybe the names will ring a bell to you: the Exterminators, the Exceptions, the Prophets, the Skunks, the Night Flight, etc.
"Garage punk: unknowns" — i have a compilation of 2 CDs, not sure if there's more, best tracks imho are "Junco Partner" by Nobody's Children (later covered by the Clash on Sandinista!), "Like what, me worry?" by OO6, "Gathers no moss" by Shadows 5, a funny version of "Roses are red" by Savages, and many more, 50 tracks in total.

What about all the Pebbles and Boulders series? Tons of good stuff on those, and the occasional gem that bowls me over.

I'll check out the Back From the Grave series as soon as I get out of Christmas debt. Some of the tracks on the Garage Punk set you talk about made it into the Garage Beat '66 series that I was talking about.

For Christmas, I received a new compilation in the Nuggets series by Rhino: Love is the Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets, 1965-1970. Along with some of the more obvious bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, there are a number of garage band rarities that show the rougher side of the Bay Area's music scene. It clearly wasn't all acoustics down at Haight-Ashbury. There are some really good tracks all over this series. Highly recommended. Also, the liner notes are very well done and the photos of the bands are really cool.

There are alot of garage comps out there but be prepared, most of them do not feature the sterling sound of the Nuggets series as most were made with only original 45's being available. The previously mentioned "Back from the Grave" series was probably the first serious collecting of unknown recordings."Teenage Shutdown","Quagmire" and "Fuzz, flaykes and shakes" and the Gear Fab labels "Psychedelic States" series are all worth seeking out.

Love it, love it, let's get a good list going here. The nuggetts series were always a good source, but it's really great to have a big being compiled here. With the internet now, tracking these gems down should be a snap :D

I've recently picked up quite a few. I'll try to get a few reviews/rundowns done while I'm enjoying the last week of my Christmas break.

+1 on Back from the Grave series.

A great collection is "A History of Garage and Frat Bands in Memphis 1960-75", particularly Volume 1. Some really great stuff there--on Shangri-La Records at http://www.shangri.com/garage.html.

The quality of records is far from perfect, though. Unfortunately. :(
