Two excellent sources for Blues CDs

Post by peewee »

I wanted to pass these two fine establishments along to all the enthusiasts here. There's so much more out there than what you get through an Amazon.com or Border's and these two guys deliver the goods:

First up is a site owned by Charlie Lange in California called Blue Beat Music(http://bluebeatmusic.com). Charlie carries about 4,000 CDs at any given time and can also locate some very hard to find and out of print music; he picked up a long out of print copy of "Emmett Miller; The Minstrel Man From Georgia" for me a few years back at an Austin, TX record convention. For those who are unfamiliar with Emmett Miller, he was the writer of Love Sick Blues which was a hit for Hank Williams. Hank also borrowed a lot from Emmett Miller's vocal style in his early years and continued to use pieces throughout his brief career. Miller's band, the Georgia Crackers, also featured players who would go on to become big names in the world of Jazz - among them were Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, trombonist Jack Teagarden, guitarist Eddie Lang and drummer Gene Krupa. Charile specializes in American Roots music, Jazz and all forms of the Blues. Definitely worth checking out.

Next is Jerry Hall's Pacific Blues Recording Company (http://www.pacificblues.com). Jerry is a former producer at Motown Records and really knows and loves the Blues. Pacific Blues started in southern California but relocated to Salem, VA. in 2005. The label is strictly a Blues label with mostly new artists and also distributes releases for those not signed to the label. Lots of good modern stuff here with a large selection of West Coast folks available.

Check both of these places out; I think they'll soon become some of your favorites for buying music!

Another site to check out is Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art Inc, which is located in Clarksdale, MS. I found through XM Radio's Bluesville (Channel 74).

Good ol' Bill Wax! I've known Bill for nearly 20 years; he was the DJ for a daily show here called "The Bluesplate Special" on WPFW that ran during the lunch hour. He's now the mucky-mucky in charge of Bluesville and a partner in XM. Bill is a true student of the music and has a vast knowledge of all things Blues. Plus, he's a great cat!
