Sarasota Slim

Post by admin »

One of the best arguments that the Blues is here to stay is this performance of Sarasota Slim. I love the groove in this performance and I just learned that all my guitar cords are now, in reference to Sarasota, short! My playing falls short too, but he really makes me want to practice.

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Hey Slim swiped Albert Collins' instrument cable!
I don't know ...Slim is hot and a great player...uses his wah to alter his tone which I like ...got the Albert King vocals down....I kept wanting to hear him sting those King phrases as well but he seemed to want to show every guitar trick he has instead.

George: A great critique. I agree that he was pulling out all of the stops, which has a way of losing people. I was, nonetheless, very impressed by the sound of this live event overall. Honestly, I was more taken by the tone of his voice than the tone of his guitar. I consider him to be a fine entertainer and wonder whether a broader sampling of his music would still keep me listening.

Here is another great performance from Slim from 15 years ago. The same old blues you say. You may see less theatrics on this one George. You gotta love the "lipsticks" for some songs.

Very cool....nice how on both videos Slim let's the keys take the first breaks....lipsticks are hip..but what's that on top of his amp..an outboard reverb unit ..gush! Thanks for the videos Peter!

George: As we know there is nothing like an outboard reverb. Mind you, I suspect that Slim's settings are somewhat lower than yours! :)

Thread drift alert! Peter..Believe it or not I'm experimenting with less dwell for some tunes..I'm finding when I double pick at a certain tempo with mucho reverb I get a brief spot where the note dies...I don't know if I'm being clear on that but it seems to happen only on the low E and only at medium tempo double picking..kinda like the picking and the reverb are out of sync?

George: I am with you. As I continue to move along the age span, I am often reminded that less is more. I love the idea of guitar --> amp, without too many layers in between. One of the reasons I enjoy Sarasota Slims live performances so much.
