Mark Walker bass demo

Post by walker »

Here's a little ditty to 'while away your coffee break/smoke break, what have you... I recently compiled segments from a handful of projects for my bass demo. The original plan was to slap together samples from about 4-5 songs, but that quickly turned into 18! I wanted to emphasize a wide variety of tones and styles, and there's no way 5 samples could have covered it all, Ricks being the great tonal palettes they are. (Endorsement deal? Hall? Hall? Anybody?)

Mark Walker bass demo

All bass parts are Rickenbacker except for one song featuring double bass. For those who REALLY like meta data, here's how it breaks down:

1. Throwaway (solo section) - 1968 4001
2. (solo section) - 1976 4001FL
3. Family Tree - 1979 4001SLH
4. (funk intro) - 1976 4001FL
5. Go My Way - (double bass)
6. Positive Spin -
Bassline: 1979 4001 Custom (The Harley Bass)
Harmonic plucks: 1979 4001SLH
7. The Incredible Shrinking Man -
Chords: Harley bass
2 basslines w/ Wah pedal panned hard left & right: Harley bass
Melody: 1976 4001FL & 1979 4001SLH doubled
8. Hiding In Plain Sight - 1976 4001FL
9. After The War - 1968 4001, double-tracked panned left & right
10. (solo section) - 1976 4001FL, double-tracked panned left & right
11. Bed Of Love -
Bassline: Harley bass
Chords panned right: 1968 4001
12. Fantasy #29 in G -
Clean bassline: 1968 4001
Distorted basslines: Harley bass
Steel drum sounds: 1979 4001SLH
13. (untitled) - Harley bass w/ Wah pedal
14. Spinning - Harley bass
15. Delusions Of Unity - Harley bass x2 w/ Wah pedal panned left & right
16. The Seduction - Harley bass, all lines & effects
17. Double Bass bit (ironically, does not actually feature a double bass. This was the first song I ever used two basses on. Recorded in 1987!) - Harley bass, 1976 4001FL
18. ROME -
Bassline: Harley bass tuned B-E-A-D, 1979 4001 SLH double tracked playing an octave above the Harley bass to create the effect of a 12-string bass.
Bass riff panned right: 1979 4001SLH.
In the 2nd half of the song, the two octave lines are dropped, and the Harley carries the rest of the bassline by itself.
Bass chords panned left in the last section: Harley bass.

Thanks for spreading the word, Scott!

Gee - all the drums are machine except for section 5 where I'm playing upright bass - that's real drummer James Shepard on a real kit. The two machines I've used over the years are an ancient Yamaha RX-17 and a lesser-ancient Alesis HR-16. The Alesis is the primary machine now, but I still midi it up to the Yamaha for the nice sloppy open hi-hat voice it has. Best hi-hat sample ever!
