I think Dave was confused about why you would post about airplanes - so he pointed out the sentence that makes the article of (more) interest to folks who come here.
The reason that the article author noted that it was "...doubly impressive..." was that the plane came in 5th and had two extra passengers (instead of only the pilot).

I meant no offense, 360dave. My interest was piqued, and I didn't want anyone to skim the article and move on.
Is this the same F C Hall (JH's father)? The flight took place in 1937. The place is right (CA), but this would have been several years before he started in the music biz. Was he making enough money from Radio-Tel to own a racing plane at 28?
