Rock Star
I was pondering this the other night. We have all heard and probably use the term Rock Star. Who, what traits, and status do you consider some to be considered a Rock Star. Is it anyone with an album out that has a little notoriety. Is it some ego maniac like Axl Pose, I mean Rose? Is it anyone in the music biz that makes music? Someone who acts and gets paid for it is called an actor, but is someone who gets paid to play music in a band a Rock Star, they are certainly musicians? Just weird stuff I think about.
Re: Rock Star
I think that it's like the current meaning of 'diva': a female who is getting (or wants to get) more public attention. There is no longer even the slightest bit of talent or skill required in being a rock star or a diva.
It's a Byrd, it's a playin'..........

In 1980 Elton John dressed up as Donald Duck and played in Central Park he is a both a Rock Star and also a Diva rolled into one. Maybe you have to dress up. KISS did it and they are most certainly Rock Stars.
Re: Rock Star
you have to be a photocopier guy in the day and the leader of a tribute band by night
Re: Rock Star
You have be known, but not necessarily super famous or rich. Being good helps too.

Re: Rock Star
To be a "star" in any industry usually requires some semblance of talent, possibly minimal; hype helps. One of my favorites, the Ramones certainly became very good players, but remained simple to continue their sound. Female pop divas of today have tabloid and little girls to help continue the dream, but of course they are not "rock."
The second I saw the duck suit I felt it was an all-time low for rock, but actually, I see EJ as a singer/piano person, not a rock star anyway...still embarrassing regardless.

Re: Rock Star
I agree the Duck Suit was ridiculous. It was just after the flamboyant 70's. Look at some of the stuff Rush wore. Kimonos on the back cover of 2112. To be a star you have to be huge. Many achieve great fame and popularity. Many are called rock stars, but are in fact guitarist, bassist, singers, drummers and keyboard players, ect. I myself am a bedroom rock star.

I'm a legend in my own mind. Does that count?

Charlie Sheen said in his meltdown he was a "total freaking rockstar from Mars"...but he can't play an instrument...or sing. However, he did do spoken vocals to a rap song.
Wait a minute...he can sing:
I really hope people understand this isn't real, but REALLY FUNNY
Like Tom and Clint have said, it means nothing, apparently.

Charlie is a Rock Star from Mars and a total train wreck, but like all train wrecks you have to look. Winning Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kind of music comes from Mars? If you date two girls at the same time and they are both half your age and one is an ex porn star you are winning. That guy was making serious cash to act like himself and he threw it away, maybe Losing Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Rock Star
It's a generic term for "popular" or "(in)famous".
In some circles, it's a derisive term for the above.
And as noted previously, diva fits into both of those slots...

Ha-ha, great minds think alike. My first thought was, this was a thread dedicated to that movie which was initially to be called "Metal god", but since the real living and breathing Metal god was strongly against it, the name had to be changed.whojamfan wrote:you have to be a photocopier guy in the day and the leader of a tribute band by night
Um, anyway.
Rock star = a star made of rock. Plain and simple.
Seriously, we may all have our own opinions on who's a real "star" and who's a "poser". There've been a lot of fights over it in the past, and there's gonna be many more in the future. It's all highly subjective.
Talent? Yeah, most likely so.
Image, charms, stage presence? Yeah, most likely so.
Ability to say something that lots of other people would relate to? Yeah, most likely so.
"Legend", stories, some mystery around a certain person? Most likely so.
Audience's wish to idolize a certain somebody? Indeed. That's probably what really makes one a "rock star" (or any other kind of "star", for that matter). Or maybe not.
And so on, and so on. Or maybe everything written above doesn't make sense at all. A highly subjective thing, really.
Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
