Stevie Ray Vaughan

Post by Spiritinthesky »

27th Aug 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed when the helicopter he was flying in, hit a man-made ski slope while trying to navigate through dense fog. Vaughan had played a show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin with Robert Cray & His Memphis Horns, and Eric Clapton. Vaughan was informed by a member of Clapton's crew that three seats were open on a helicopter returning to Chicago with Clapton's crew, it turned out there was only one seat left; Vaughan requested it from his brother, who obliged. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage were also killed.

RIP!
My brother turned me onto SRV in the early '80's.
I saw Stevie open for Robert Plant in about 1987 at Blossom and then again in Pittsburgh a few months before he died, on tour with Jeff Beck.

Stevie played at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, 1982 or '83. I didn't go to the show for lack of money. It is an outdoor venue, and I heard the band doing soundcheck as I happened by, so I walked in through an open gate in the back and sat down in the front row and watched in awe. Didn't seem to bother anybody.

At one point a technician sitting at the soundboard got onto the P.A. and suggested to Stevie that he turn his guitar volume down to get a better mix. Stevie replied, "But I don't want to," and kept on wailing.
