Last Dance With Mary Jane
Re: Last Dance With Mary Jane
Despite Marty and Alvin's cover of the song, Last Dance with Mary Jane is a great song. This was also the last song Stan Lynch played with the Heartbreakers and he played like his *** off.

Re: Last Dance With Mary Jane
Petty's original song was recorded in July 1993, and was originally titled "Indiana Girl", but changed to "Mary Jane's Last Dance" as the session went along.
The song was first written in 1990, when Tom, Mike and Stan Lynch were jamming. Tom came up with this progression, and eventually wrote the lyrics.
It was recorded for the "Greatest Hits" album and Tom wasn't sure if they should recorded a new song for a greatest hits compilation. It was a huge song, much to Tom's suprise. This song was recorded in the middle of the classic "Wildflowers", too.
Along with this song, the band also recorded (all are available on "Playback"):
Come On Down to My House (a loose jam with Mike on heavy fuzz guitar)
Elvis' "Wooden Heart" and "Baby, Let's Play House"
Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air" (now obsolete, although I am lucky to have a copy of the original "Greatest Hits" where this song originally appeared)
The band for this session:
Tom Petty - lead vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, ending solo on "Mary Jane's Last Dance"
Mike Campbell - lead guitar (including a Ric 12-string on "Something in the Air")
Benmont Tench - keyboards
Howie Epstein - bass guitar, backing vocals
Stan Lynch - drums
Chris Trujillo - percussion
This was the last session the band ever recorded with Stan Lynch, only to be replaced by the energetic Steve Ferrone the following year.
Tom's main guitars were his Torucaster "'52 Telecaster" and a '64 Epiphone Casino
Mike's main guitars were a '65 Rickenbacker 360/12 fireglo, his '51 Fender Broadcaster and a Gretsch Tennessean
Howie's bass was a '62 reissue Jazz Bass in black

Re: Last Dance With Mary Jane
Tom said it was a song left over from "Full Moon fever" that hadn't been completed.
