Heartbreakers' amps

Post by JakeK »

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been noted for their incredible use of fine vintage guitars, but their amp use has been pretty cool, too. I've made a list of all the amps TP, Mike, Blair, Scott and Howard used with the band, starting with Tom and Mike in Mudcrutch:

Tom:
Fender Bassman head with Showman cab, both Blackface (1971-1975)
Fender Super Six Reverb (studio only) (1976-1981)
Vox Super Beatle (stage only) (1976-1983, 2005-2008)
Various Vox AC-30s from 1960-1966 (studio and stage) (1982-2002)
Fender Deluxe Reverb, silverface (studio only) (1987-1999)
Fender Bassman, piggyback, blonde/wheat (1994-1999)
Marshall Plexi 50 watt half-stack, red tolex (2003-2006)
Hiwatt Custom 50 head, white tolex (ran through Super Beatle cabinet) (2005-2008)
Fender Vibro-King, extension cab set up for performances (2009-present)

Mike:
Fender Twin Reverb, blackface (1971-1976)
Fender Deluxe, Tweed (studio only) (1976-1982)
Vox Super Beatle (stage only) (1976-1983)
Various Vox AC-30s from 1960-1966 (studio and stage) (1982-2002)
Fender Deluxe Reverb, silverface (studio only) (1987-1999)
Fender Bassman, piggyback, blonde/wheat (1994-1999)
Fender Princeton Reverb, blackface (run through Super Beatle cab during 2005-2008) (2002-present)
Fender Showman, blonde/wheat (2009-present)

Ron Blair:
Vox Super Beatle (stage and studio) (1975-1981)
Fender Bassman with Showman cab, both blonde/wheat (stage and studio), (2002-2004)
Ampeg SVT, modern (2005-2008)
Ampeg SVT VR (2008-present)

Howie Epstein:
Vox Super Beatle (stage and studio from 1982-1983, studio only from 1984-1994)
Acoustic Bass stack (stage only) (1984-1987)
Vox AC-30 bass head through Roland extension cab (1989-1995)
Fender Bassman with Showman cab, both blonde/wheat (stage and studio) (1996-2001)

Scott Thurston:
Vox AC-30 (1991-2001)

I think I read somewhere that the Super Beatles are just for show - they don't actually get turned on.
