D Chord Shape For "American Girl" Intro?

Post by drumbob »

Can anyone tell me the correct D Chord shape for the intro to "American Girl?"

I have been playing a standard open D chord, but I know it's incorrect.

I play it :

e|--10
B|--7
G|--7
D|--0
A|--X
E|--X
If it is to be, it is up to me.

Tom ('64 Strat in studio, Ric 12 live):
Standard open D

Mike (on Broadcaster/Telecaster):
e: 10
B: 10
G: 11
D: 12
A: X
E: X

That's how I've seen it done, anyway. Like in the videos:

Let me know if it helps, Bob.

I've seen Campbell play it in this fashion also:

E A D G B E
12TH X
13TH
14TH X X
15TH X

I've played it:
e: 10
B: x
G: 7
D: 0
A:
E:

I've tried some of the other ways and they either have too much to them or they don't have that drone to them that I hear in the song.

I use this on the C63, with some compression and an analog delay (Carbon Copy) set about 9 o'clock for regen and 2-3 o'clock for delay.

This is the way i have always played it in single guitar bands.

Sounds (& looks) right to me. In early videos it's the form Campbell uses on a Tele.
