McCartney's new Hofner bass!

Post by RobRick »

Paul McCartney played a Hofner violin bass painted with the British Union Jack last night at the Queen's Jubilee concert. His seems to be a custom shop V62.

Hofner is going to sell a limited number (60) of the Contemporary model in this finish:

Very cool. Poor old Paul is looking more and more like someone's spinster aunt as time marches on.

I wonder if, at 70, McCartney should just crop his hair shorter and let it go gray. Like Jimmy Page, who looks great, I think.

I personally the McCartney looks absolutely fantastic for his age!
Here are some pics of the bass:

Its a contemporary which means it has a sustain block, so I can't imagine it sounding too hofnery.

Also, does anyone know if he ended on "Her Majesty"?

They definitely sound way more Hofner-y than any non-Hofner does. But there does seem to be a stark difference nevertheless (to my ears). My dad's faker sure sounds great (without a sustain block and in spite of having terrible action).

Not sure if it's a fact that this one has a sustain block or not. I haven't investigated at all, but I imagine being custom anything's possible whatever model it is designated.

I've heard ones on youtube that sound absolutely nothing like hofners, but then again that could have been string choice, playing style, pickup configuration, or EQ settings.
To get my icon to sound hofner-y I put on flatwounds (never clean them), have a peice of foam in there as a mute, use only the neck pickup, use compression, and EQ the heck out of my amp with a fair amount of bass and minimal highs.
I've read that because of the sustain block the don't have that "thump."

Yeah, this one has white switches, no neck binding, no writing on the TRC, and it has a paint job so it is very custom.

The one McCartney played is a V62 German made bass.

The limited edition will be a CT with a sustain block.

No, he did not play HER MAJESTY last night.

Looks like a cool finish on that one. And while the debate still rages about the Contemporary sound, I have played both a German and I own a Contemporary. I've set mine up with flats and play with a felt pick, this does have that German, fully-hollow sound. I think it depends on what you're looking to hear, really, and your overall setup.
