Which guitars were used in I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
Which guitars were used in I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
Hello everyone!
So this morning I'm watching the Today Show and there was a segment for an upcoming auction.
Included in this auction, is George's Rickenbacker that he bought when he came alone to the US and stayed with his sister.
http://www.today.com/entertainment/giml ... 2D79477160
The auction rep claims that it was used in the recording of I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Any truth to this?
I know of Lennon's compressed guitar but to me, the leads that George plays on the recording don't sound like a Rickenbacker.
I've always wondered if this guitar was used in any recordings.
Would love to know what you guys think!

The general consensus is that George played the 425 (and it definitely sounds like it..).
This opinion is shared by Andy Babiuk, who most would consider an expert on the subject.

"Also part of the Music Icons, Legends and Rebels event will be a 1962 Rickenbacker guitar played by both John Lennon and George Harrison and featured on the recording of "I Want to Hold Your Hand." With a value of $400,000 to $600,000, it's the biggest draw."
Did I mention that my birthday is in October?

Re: Which guitars were used in I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
please keep in mind: George's 425 then was equiped with only one pu in the middle position. To me, it sounds like a low impedance pu (i,e. an early one, like they were used in John Lennon's first 325 "Hanburg model" - and in the 325C58). This 325 Hamburg model was, of course, used by Lennon for IWTHYH.

p.s. Paul used his new (second) Hofner bass (in the "BASS"-position, and for the smal signature lick in the "TREBLE"-position)

While anything is possible, I've never heard it discussed that GH used the 420 on IWTHYH. I would have guessed Country Gent, as it was his newest acquisition (Dec. '63, right?).

Interesting info at the very bottom of this page...
http://www.beatlesebooks.com/hold-your-hand
It must be secret code though - while the text says that George was playing is Country Gent - the picture at the very bottom is the group holding George's 425!!
Secret info gleaned? If only we could play the record backwards perhaps we can hear George saying "I buried the Rickenbacker 425 in the mix"

Re: Which guitars were used in I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
What guitars on "Komm gib mir deine Hand"?
Well, "I want to hold your hand" was the first Beatles' song to be recorded on a 4-track tape machine.
There was track 1 "background track": bass, drums, John's guitar
track 2: George's guitar,
track 3: (separate take) vocals
track4: (next separate take) additional vocals, reverb, Paul's signatur lick...
For "Komm gib mir deine Hand", there was a new background mix generated from the original track 1 and 2
They could not use track 4, because there were background vocals in english.
So Pauls' lick doesent make it to the german version. Instead George played Paul's lick, most probably, with his Country Gent.
The german vocals and the bassguitar lick, (now played by George on guitar), was added to the background track mentioned above in Paris.
So, George's main guitar take was the same for either the english and the german version. To me: the 425

My 425v63 had ONE sound in it: IWTHYH
Re: Which guitars were used in I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
So a 425V63 for KGMDH and IWTHYH? Sounds like secret code.
