Pyramid strings???

Post by kvalois »

Hi, everyone:

I'm thinking about trying, for the first time, Pyramid strings on my Roger McGuinn RM370-12. I came across an earlier discussion about these strings from 5 years ago. So, I'm wondering if there is any update on information.
Here are my questions:

1) Why are the EXACT Pyramid 12 strings recommended on Roger's website impossible to find? I spend hours online and calling different companies to learn that nobody stocks them!! AND, nobody seems to know why not!!!

2) Are Pyramid strings dangerous to the Ric necks due to tension?

Thanks,

Karl :D

Hi, Jake:

I called that company and they said that these strings are not the same as the ones Roger recommends on his web site

For those of us following this thread, here's a description of the strings recommended on Roger's website:

Pyramid Gold The Ultimate 12-String Set. Pure Nickel Flat Wire Wound Strings with Silver-Plated Plain Strings. Gauges are .010/.010 , .013/.013 , .010/.020w , .013/.030 , .020w/.035 . .030/.0465

How are these different than the strings referenced in Jake's post?

The strings that Roger's talking about are the old hex core strings. The newer strings pictured state they are round core. More flexibility. I'm not a fan of Pyramid strings. Too much pressure on the neck and tailpiece. I use Thomastik-Infeld. I make my own sets. .039-.023/.033-.018w/.023-.012/.018w-.009/.012-.012/.009-.009. Plenty of jangle!

Ron:

Again, the people at Strings and Beyond said that they didn't have the exact ones Roger suggested. Also, I believe that the gauges are different. Here are the ones for the product you mentioned:

Gauge:

H310-12 12-String Light 10 10 13 13 10 19w 13 30 19w 35 30 46.5

And, if you look closely, the description on the front is different. The ones that Roger recommends say:
12-string guitar
E octave
Light gauge

The ones that you brought up say:

12-string guitar
1st pair Plain E
Nickel flatwound set
etc

So, I am not the expert here by any means. But, they seem to be different

Thanks Paul and Karl. I was just wondering what the difference was between the two Pyramid sets and you've explained it.

I personally favor the Thomastik-Infeld 12-string sets.
