Older higains

Post by sloop_john_b »

I headed to Mandolin Bros. guitar shop today for a little while to mess with a Twin Reverb, which i'm looking into buying.

I played a cool 1979 360/12 through it, and it sounded incredible. Out of curiosity, I decided to try a brand new 360/12 after it, to hear the difference in sound.

The new one sounded much more mellow and lifeless. In comparison, the older pickup sounded incredible - reminiscent of Paul Weller's early 330 tone, which I've been trying to nail unsuccessfully. I suppose I can describe it as "spiky" sounding, and much more trebly.

Is it possible to have my bridge higain "wound" to sound like an older one?

Might be the .0047 cap in the circuit, as I recently discovered on my 1980 Ric.

the older high gain pickups are wound to about 8k ohms ... modern high gain pickups are wound to about 11k ohms ...

and there were some differences ... the s5 high gain is usually 15k ohms and in the late 80s some of the high gains were wound to 12k or more and high gains can vary +/- 1k ohm because of the way they are wound ...
