Never too late?

Post by sowhat »

Frankly, the idea of this topic was stolen from another section placed at the top of the list of music history & interpretation forums (i'm sooooorrrrry...).
As some say, punk, or "alternative" music in general, is music of angry young men and should be played by angry young men. A stereotype? Perhaps.
So, how'd ya think: is there a point in life (a certain number of years or a certain experience behind the back) when it's "too late to be punk"? Or is it "never too late"? I've heard some say that, for instance, Johnny Rotten now looks ridiculous and pitiful and that he's "too old and too fat to play punk", that they don't believe in his sincerity anymore. Just an example.
Your ideas? As always, all kinds of opinions welcome.

Personally I'd say if your heart, soul and energy are in it. Play it and be it.
:)

Sheena did you catch that post with Ringo's new tune with George Micheal playing a JG Rick?
Posted in The Others - "Ringo" as the thread title.
I thought I remember you mentioning Ringo in a thread lately.

Johnny Rotten might be too rich to be taken seriously as a punk!

I dunno. Seems teenage angst and male menopause are yin/yang.

Below - Teenage angst or male menopause song?

Everyone smiles, has a good day
Ooh, all the while I'm down in a haze
Don't want no food
I'm acting rude too all

I'm turning blue, too blue to move

I can't explain things that occur
Inside my brain my thoughts are a blur
I need to find a way to unwind my mind
I'm turning blue...

My baby don't care, she's in a world of her own
I'm in despair, she's not at home
Feeling ill, I need a pill, doctor please
I'm turning blue...

Hmmm... that makes it for a different discussion.

I like that idea, Kevin; however, there's also that damned public factor and the verdicts like, "you're too old to play punk at 30/40/50/etc". They can be a bit of a trouble.
Yes, just watched it, thanks for the reminder, albeit i don't remember mentioning Ringo here. Oh wait... you mean... Ringo is a punk rocker?!

No need to feel sorry, Kevin, i was just trying to play a bit so as to introduce Ringo in the discource naturally. Ringo's not a punk rocker... hmmm... could've been a song title...

I think IMHO that people like to naturally dismiss People/Groups that get to a certain age but i always think that its a younger generation slagging the older ones.Yeah i think people dont like to be reflected in a way that makes them look old or faded.(as some members here have said in the past Oh im showing my age here!)I think the older we all get in life the more we become tolerant (well id hope so).As that said Id say its never too late as its funny how we all change as we get older and our attitudes relax and our lifes become less unbalanced and more structured. So live and let live and let the good times roll while they can cause one day it will be over too soon.So rock till you drop ya bad *** punk.

Good points, Scott. As somebody said, "children are the only ones who actually like to get older".
The trouble with younger generation slagging older ones is not hard to explain. One has more trust in somebody who's about the same age as them than in somebody who's a lot older (or younger, for that matter). Like, "he's my age, he lives in the same world as i, so he can understand how i feel and i can relate to what he says. And this old guy... what does he know about my life?!".
The other trouble is the common stereotype that a "true punk" should "live fast and die young". Some even find it hard to "forgive" their idols a long happy (or not so happy) life instead of suicide at age 27. (Who are they to judge is another question. Anyway, that's too sad...)

If a performance or sentiment is HONEST age is not an issue.
I do cringe when I see some old performers trying to present a hip image.
The fact is if the material is solid, the image is unimportant.

We must be true to ourselves. It IS hard to understand RICH guys masquerading as PUNKS. It's like seeing Geoge Bush in line at a soup kitchen. Suffice to say that Ray Davies is more punk that John Lydon-Rotten these days.

Continuity is factor that can negate age. The Ramones rattled along for a good many years without losing their cred. I would venture that Iggy Pop, the godfather of punk, is still credible despite the fact that he is geriatric.

It's much harder to be taken seriously as an emerging punk artist if you're in your 30s, let alone 40s, though I'm sure with the right PR machine, anything is possible!
