1976 Autumnglo 4001FL!?!?

Hello again all...it's good to be back.I just bought the strangest thing...it's a 1976 Autumnglo 4001FL,and it's the only one that I've ever seen,or heard of...1970's Autumnglo bass,yes...4001FL,yes...but both in one bass?Nope.Everone who sees it says"WTF?!?!"...my friend Jim Hirth,who has a 360/12 and a nice 325C58,put it best..."You,my friend,SUCK!"...it sure looks,plays and sounds GREAT,and it's a nice addition to my RIC collection...has anyone else out there ever seen one?Usually 4001FL's were Jetglo,Mapleglo,or Fireglo...the Autumnglo finish is dreamy...

If you mean the one from the pawnshop in Tucson,that sold on November 17th,that's the one that I bought...it was almost three weeks before I got it!The bass had a $1100 Buy It Now,and not a single bid...I pulled the trigger at 34 seconds ...it was just too good to pass up,and the pix on eBay did NOT do it justice!This thing looks brand new,not 33 years old!

Did you replace the lost position marker yet?? 4001FL' are great basses, I have a wht/wht (yellowed) 4001FL. Good score!!

Dang! That thing was relisted two times. I knew I would regret not buying it. Glad it has a good home.

I passed on it as well. I have a fretted Autumnglo from within a couple of months of that one and thought it would be cool to have twins, but it just wasn't in the cards. There's also been a white fretless from '76 floating around that I keep considering buying, so it looks like '76 was a good year for alternate-color fretlesses?

Funny though, I had heard he "invented" the fretless, but I thought I'd seen fretless Rics dated pre-76 on the 'Bay.

Nah, there were fretless basses way before Jaco. Fender made factory fretless Precisions since at least 1971, if not earlier. And I've seen several sources stating that Bill Wyman was the first major player to use one in the early '60s. It looks like Ampeg made fretless basses as early as '65 too.

A friend here in Halifax has a late 70s fretless Autumnglo with black trim . Beautiful bass in almost new condition . Another friend has an Autumnglo 4000 with a set neck . He bought it new back in the day .

.... then there's Ginger's fretless Autumnglo 4002 - also a single owner bass . ( she has played the living bejesus out of that one though ...)

Seems like Autumnglo was popular up this way .

FYI just a friendly correction - 4002's were glossy, thus Walnut. They only came in WAL and MG.

Good score!![/quote]The first thing that I did after tuning it (it was almost perfectly in tune!) and playing it for a few minutes,was replace the missing inlay...I cut one out of a piece of mother-of-pearl,instead of acrylic,and it looks great...you have to be a totally anal-retentive,obsessive-compulsive RIC fanatic to even notice the difference...and yes,it DOES bug me a little,but WTF...nobody has noticed but me...and MAN,you should hear this thing through two TR35B amps,in R/O/S...really zoopy!
