If it's reading open, it most likely can be repaired! I had a new pickup bad in a 2008 660/12 I bought last summer. I noticed no treble at all, just mud! Tap on the pickups, one bad! Emailed Ric Corp, no response at all, so after a few days I figured, It wasn't under warranty because I was the second owner, so I opened it up and found the wire loose on the winding. Soldered the wire and I was in business! I knew why this was traded in to my local music store, because whoever bought this thought, this sounds like **** for brand new. I must stress, IF YOU DON'T SOLDER, DON'T MAKE THIS YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT!!! The windings are delicate! If you you break off some of the winding, unravel a turn, give yourself enough wire, it won't effect your sound! Not all is lost, if it is reading open, anyone who is decent at electronics, can fix it with a regulated soldering iron and patience.

You were lucky, Paul, in your case the open was right at the end of the coil near where it solders to the terminal. Many times pickups can open up in the middle of the coil, necessitating a rewind. Sergio would have looked for an open at the end. He is the man to go to for Rick pickups.
