Ampeg 6x10 or 2x15

Post by nextcliffburton »

I have both and I'm trying to figure out which one will make my 4001 sound better. What do you think?

Are they in separate practice spaces?

I would think that the opinion that would matter most here is yours. Are you able to plug both in and A/B them?

I've played through a 6X10 and many other Ampeg cab formats but I'm not sure if ever through a 2X15. I have definitely played through a 1X15 on more than one occasion and can say I prefer the 6X10.

I thought the 8X10, 610HLF and 410HLF all sounded very similar but the 410HE did not have the same grunt. So I went with the 410HLF.

I have read some pretty bad reviews of the 6x10s before. Sort of the worst of both worlds between a 4x10 and an 8x10 according to one reviewer, because of the way the drivers are set up.

The 2x15 sounds interesting, or else I'd get multiple 4x10s etc. Or a 4x10+2x15, that would be a pretty epic rig.

I've also heard the same thing, Joshua. I've played through one once or twice and it sounded great, but that was at a music store so I didn't crank it up. Maybe it's problems (if it does have them) would have been more apparent with the volume cranked.

Choosing between those two, I'd go with the 2x15. I love the tone of 15'' speakers. I like the punch and low end of multiple 10s, but the tone of a 15 is unique in my experience. And always remember to let the PA do it's job. A good system will blow away whatever stage rig you have, if you play nice with the sound guy. Assuming he's not a knuckle head!

That's a tough one. I agree with what others have said about 6x10 cabs....the only one I like is the Bergantino NV610. I was never too happy with 10's or 15's in any configuration by themselves. 2x10+2x15 or 4x10+1x15 sound great and bring out the best that each have to offer and mask any shortcomings. The Ampeg 1540 sounds nice but I prefered the Mesa version for tone (individual preference) and it is more compact....same size as a 6x10 vs. the 1540 being 8x10 size.

I have a pair of Ampeg HLF410's and think they are the best sounding cabs I've ever owned. They sounded fine stock ,but I needed 2ohm cabs to get the most out of my Ampeg PB800 and SVP1600 power amps, so I changed out the speakers to 8ohm Eminence DeltaLites. These cabs are rated down to 28hz and sound great with a five string. Not all cabs, even Ampeg's, are rated that low, so it's important to select your cab carefully. One of these cabs with the PB800 has proved to be more than enough for anything I've used it for yet, so I just leave one at home and take one to wherever I'm playing. It's also not so big and heavy that I can't move it by myself.

I've heard those are really good sounding cabs, I've even thought of getting one myself as something to go between the SVT cabs and the ampeg B-15T cabs I use.

Personally I would go with the 2x15's, but it all really comes down to what sounds good to your ears. Myself....... I've got a 2x18 subwoofer cab for the bottom, and run the bridge through my guitar rig. with a 4x12. Both cabinets are Carvins. So I get the low boom and the Geddy Lee growl.
Oh yeah. It all starts with a 1977 4001. :D
