No, Sheena...strictly speaking, and by virtue of it's location in the larger 'tree' of forums (fora???), it's a 'Musical History and Interpretation' forum...

+1 for the Clash.

This IS a punk forum, so there can't be a "bad" version.

I would like to hear a version where the Clashs intro and outro are used, and Bobby Fullers solo is used. I really dig that solo, it's almost Townshend like in its voicings and chords, and spent many hours as a new guitar player trying to figure it out. I'll get it eventually

I've always loved the Clash's version and the original, but Thug Murder absolutely kicks! Great find Sheena!! :D Pity they were so short lived.... but that's punk for ya!

As for the Big Dirty Band...art rockers have ZERO credibility as punks.... they send me to sleeeep zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yep, indeed, Evan. Well, as for BDB... who cares if they're art rockers?
Just a little reminder, since we're on the 2nd page already: a) you can vote for up to two versions, and b) if you've changed your mind, you can re-vote.

I've always been a fan of the Fuller version first and the Clash version second. The Fuller version has the grit of garage band and the twang of proto-country rock. Couple his Brian Jones-ish demise with the fact that he was a very talented musician and there is a very cool, tragic story to it all.

For me, the problem with BDB is that they may be big, but they ain't dirty. To have these uber-musicians playing a simple rebel song is kind of like getting Monet to daub some edgy graffiti - totally pointless. It makes these talented folk look like posing merchants.

Meanwhile, I was going to give the Boss the gong for worst version until I saw The Men They Couldn't Hang. The fact that people were applauding still has me dumbfounded... It would have been nice if the backing vocalist had gotten the lyrics straight too.... I've been in some really, truly, incredibly awful bands, but that performance by TMTCH makes such past horrors look like the work of musical geniuses....

Found another nice version. Out of contest, but cool anyway. Imho, of course.

I have to give it to The Stray Cats. Setzer's tone is sublime.

Nothing tops Bobby Fuller's original. Green Day wasn't half bad. Had Mike Ness been on the ballot he might have edged out Green Day for second place for my vote. Worst? Big Dirty. It's just plain in the wrong key for the singer.

The original is the best. No one will beat Bobby Fuller. It's my favorite song of all time.
