Tom/Mike Ric Collection

Post by JakeK »

I received a PM from Brian Simer regarding a thread I had started about the large collection of Rickenbackers that Tom and Mike have owned since '77, but it has gone missing, so here it is, and thanks to the link Dan Powell posted regarding Tom's current rig setup, we have info on some of the Rics Tom has used.

Tom:
1966 365OS FG
1974 362 JG
1967 360/12 MG
1987 1997 FG
1988 370/12 McGuinn MG
1989 660/12TP prototype FG
1996 360/12V64 FG (owned by Howie, used by Tom)
1964 425 or Electro ES-25 FG
1965 1997 Rose Morris FG
1965 1993 Rose Morris FG
2003 4001C64
2008 360/12C63

Mike:
1963 625/12 FG
1966 360/12 FG
1989 350 MC Custom
1965 330/12 MG

If anyone has any more to add, or finds new info, please add it in!

Jake, I think that would be ES-17. I don't think there was an ES-25.

There also were those Redneck basses, though I'm not sure if they're a part of their collection.

Petty also has a 325v63, as I mentioned in the last thread.

JB- Thanks for the name of the ES-17. I knew it was a ES-something that looked like a 425. Just randomly stuck some numbers in there. I'm not sure if the Redneck basses were Tom and Mike's or even Howie's, but in the inner booklet for "Full Moon Fever", shot in Mike's garage, there is the silhouette of the 8-string.

Dan- you are correct, Tom used a 325V63 (with overdrive, something you rarely use with a 325) while recording dialouge for an episode of "The Simpsons". He also has a '06 1996 AFG.

Jerry- right you are, Mike used a 330 Capri FG with a Bigsby, not sure what to call it, maybe some of us here can figure it out?

Jake,

Whichodel is mike playing in the Classic Album: Damn the Torpedoes? He was playing it while showing how he came up with the lead for Even the Losers.

The Capri shown in "Baby Please Don't Go" is what Mike plays for "Even the Losers". He hasn't had it since then, he played the original recording's solo on the "Red Dog" Telecaster. The Capri has a two tailpieces, a regular flat trapeze and a Bigsby. How Mike strings it is he runs the string through the tailpiece through the Bigsby. Why it has two tailpieces, we'll never know!

Do you mean he switches the tailpieces on and off? Maybe the trapeze was the original and he installed a Bigsby later?

Either watch "Baby Please Don't Go" or I can get a screencap of it. He has both tailpieces on at the same time. It's very unusual.

What about Mike Campbell's 1966 610 that was refinished in JG and reshaped into a 350?

There were a few paragraphs about that guitar in the Richard Smith book.

I don't see it on your list.
