Listening again with fresh ears, it may well be a chromatic run all the way down to the A! I am working on a fingering for it that works for me, anyway.

I remembered Richard Roosa's great thread on Rock Band tracks and got the isolated bass line from it.

GOT IT!!!

Hit the open A and let it ring while playing the following run:

B♭- A - A♭- G - G - G♭- F - E - E♭- D - D♭- C - A

The run of notes is played on the G string except for the lower A which is played at the 7th fret on the D string. You will need all four fingers on the fretting hand (no slackers, here ), play the first four notes then slide down so the pinkie is on the G for the next run of notes then slide down again so that your pinkie is on the E♭ for the last run down; the lower A is played with the ring finger.

Got it? I think I finally do!

that was interesting-! i like the upper register fills at 6.20-6.25,which sound more melodic to my ears,and less of the chromatic stuff. that may be part of the reason i tend to have trouble with this... i tend to want to keep whatever i play in a some type of melody,or maybe i just tend to follow the guitar chords. I still think that this is shredding for Paul,tho.

I knew my JBL's weren't lying, I figured it was something like that.

For now, I'll have to do it glissando style, and once I've got the song nailed, I can work on it that way. No wonder amphetamines became so popular back then. Perhaps I can have a few pots of coffee first.

I was thinking that Paul's part is pretty amazing considering the intake of various particulate matter that had to have enhanced his brain functions.

Chromatic scales are a great playing exercise! Definitely helps with the speed (and I don't mean the stuff Paul was exercising ).
