Gretsch dropping 5120/5122

Post by Ric_MEL »

News has it that Gretsch is dropping the Electromatic 5120 and the 5122.

Already announced is a 5422.. very nice rendition of the 5122.. 2" deep body.. the new Electromatic pickups ( first appeared on the solid body Electromatics ) , block inlays, bound F hole, gold hardware - to be available in July. From what I can tell, - White and Red with a street price purportedly about $1k

A 5420 is being talked about.. but I haven't seen any confirmation.

Since I believe no references to other forums are allowed.. just check some of the obvious ones.

Love the pickups. Glad to see the dumbuckers gone. Headstock, though faithful to vintage, still looks a bit too 1940s huge; same with the F holes...This will be a popular line with a great price ($600 street).

I'd like to try the new 5422 12 string myself.

The electromatic hollow body bass I bought at guitar center last summer (it was a limited edition guitar center fsr) is one of the best sounding and playing basses I have bought in a long time. TV Jones pickups sound incredible.

Now they are putting it into full production only in burgundy. If its got the same pu's I'd highly recommend it!

I've just been doing a little drool session over at a certain online shop. That white one is gorgeous, I've always wanted a White Falcon but now an affordable alternative exists. now with any luck I won't do anything stupid like put my 650C up for sale to get a Grtesch
♪♫♪♫I need new strings, these ones have a bunch of dang wrong notes on 'em ♫♪♫♪

That white double cutaway is gorgeous. :)

Hello!
Just some info about the Gretsch 5422.. It has Filtertron pick-up's. Yes, that's the same as The White Falcon have too. Myself, I have the 5122 and I'm talking with my music dealer to upgrade it.. It also have different fret markings. The 5122 has fret thumbnails, and the 5422 has fret blocks.. You can find it on the Gretsch web site and in the new catalogue.. May the Gretsch be with you! Lottie in Sweden (I'm also Lottie on Gretsch-Talk.. And there's a pic of my guitar)

Welcome to the RRF, Lottie. Not only am I a Rickenbacker enthusiast, I also play a Gretsch, a 5120 with stock G-buckers. And I actually like those pickups.

I played one of these last weekend. Very sweet for the price and the color was awesome - but I opted for the 12 string in black! (edit: Around $600.00 here in the 'burgh.)

But those new BlackTop pickups are really good.

Gretsch have improved things with the new 54XX range

My advise would be 'try before you buy' though as there have been some QC issues. If you get a good one
you've got an excellent instrument especially if you update the pots.

Having gigged with my 5435T I can honestly say I've had no problems at all.
