I knew also. I met John's father over the Memorial Day weekend. JH hinted at that here, at about that time. That's a cool story, but even better when John told me how he found his biological family. 8)

Congrats Mr. Hall!
Imagine how much different your life would have been without Rickenbacker. Its an odd thing to think about.
Very heartwarming story!

Thanks for posting, Paul. I didn't know that either. Steve Jobs had a similar past. He got quite close to his birth sister eventually. It is all in that good Steve Jobs bio.

A fellow (older) trombone player I know was in a similar situation as John Hall's father. He eventually married the woman they had the first child with, but the girl was given up for adoption and they lost track of her. They eventually got married. I'd only known that they'd had 3 kids together for years, not an additional oldest girl. That oldest daughter given up for adoption is now a part of the family who visits often and apparently looks and acts a lot like her mother. I only just found out about her within the past 6 months as news slowly leaked out.

What interesting and monolithic turns life takes. Congratulations, John. I'd say what my wife says often, "May the angels watch over you", but I think they have been.

Thanks for the kind comments. It has indeed been an amazing experience, one I would not have ever imagined happening.

Many times these types of reunions do not go well; sibling jealousy, child having thoughts of rejection, etc., but there's been none of that, just happy times.

What's been amazing are the number of things we have in common, stuff that genetics shouldn't play a part of. My dad is an inveterate wood worker and a pilot, passions we've shared independently. We've also faced some rather similar difficulties in life on a number of levels.

That isn't to say there aren't some differences. He plays no musical instruments, for example. By training he's a physicist but an architect and contractor by profession.

As noted, I have five half-sisters, a half brother and untold numbers of nieces and nephews. I haven't met them all yet but my youngest sister and I really get along well. Siblings are an entirely new concept to me but I have to say that I really enjoy being the oldest!

None of this diminishes my feelings about my adoptive parents and gaining a whole new family this late in life is nothing but a big plus.
