I used to fly with a trombone at times, but it was before 9/11. I'd pack the inside of the SKB tenor trombone case with a styrofoam cone in the bell, socks, etc., to keep the bell section from moving and getting crinkled. Many people started simply shipping their instruments to not have to deal airline instrument damage issues. With shipping, the same internal packing considerations apply, but if packed well enough there should be no issues.
