Modern Hi Gain to hot toaster conversion?

Post by MoldyJuice »

Hi all, after having a 430 for the longest time I have finally graduated up to a jetglo 330. On my previous ric 430 I had modified the bridge pickup with unwinding it and replacing the magnet with an alnico one, this sounded worlds better than the normal hi gain but still not fully toaster. Eventually I got a proper Lollar toaster for the neck and loved the sound. I find the pickups on my new 330 rather shrill and not very full bodied or warm. So I have been looking online and found out that the bobbin the modern hi gains are uses is the same as the toaster one. So I was wondering if I decided to remove the poles from the pickup drill them out to the 0.250" size and insert alnico 5 pole pieces would it sound something like the 12k hot toasters? Thanks.

It would likely sound close....though the high gains aren't scatterwound as far as I know, while the modern toasters are. The 12k toasters weren't scatterwound, or at least weren't advertised as such.
