Electronics is my profession. I also am conversant with the (now old) Van Halen idea of running "Brown Sound" by running amps at reduced supply voltage by using a Variac.
Should you use one or need one? Not needed at all.

A bit of jam night fun...

Andy M - I think the thing you were looking at and thinking was a Variac is just a mains extension.
Had to look up what a Variac is, as I've never heard of them in the UK. :)

The extension reel is vaguely similar to this one:

But, if that extension cord is long enough (say, several miles in length) it could, inadvertently, act like a variac, of sorts!

You, actually, know how to play one of those things?!?!?!?!?!?

I've been playing those since just a few months after I started playing bass in 1971. :D

A short clip of "The Fish" at the Roger Dean Exhibition at Trading Boundaries in Sussex on Oct 1st.
Roger was there for the show and he even gave me his blessing for using the logo!

Well, to be fair, there's two kits up there. .... just like Peart.... Though Fred's kit does take up a bit of real estate. It sounds great.
