Vinyl

Post by Kiddwad57 »

What's the feeling about vinyl records around here? The reason for asking is that I very recently sold a bunch of records that hadn't been listened to in, probably, thirty years. This includes most of the Parlophone Beatles albums* that have been part of my stuff since early high school days, plus anything else I have a cd copy of. I haven't yet progressed to items that are only backed up on hard drive. It was weird but so far no regrets. What sources do you prefer to listen to?

*I kept Sgt Peppers, it's gatefold sleeve is too useful for practicing dovetail joints.

I had about 500 albums that i sold, along with my Technics linear tracking turntable, about 20 or so years ago. I had already replaced a lot of them with cd's and gradually just didn't listen to the lps anymore. Now all my cd's are on my itunes,so i seldom actually ever play the actual cds either. I was never convinced of lp's sonic superiority over cds,and find the popular return to vinyl lps kind of amusing.
I did keep a few favorite lps, which are in display frames on my home office walls.

I still have around 2000 or so LPs, although I have not had a turntable set up in 10 years or so...

Back around 2005, I made digital copies of the essential music, mostly folk, that never got put out on CD, They are on shelves in a large cub-board, behind a wall of books. But I know they are still there. On a similar note I have 1000 VHS and Beta video tapes, and it is only in the past few months that I have begun to make digital copies of them.

When I am dead, somebody is gonna make a killing in Vintage vinyl... Assuming they don't all end up in a dumpster!!

I don't know much about folk, but here's one that I dragged my turntable out to digitize a couple of weeks ago:

A friend of mine, also a musician and primarily into jazz, has a listening group that gets together over a stack'o'platters. He said it's all about the ritual. They pull out an album, read and pass around the album covers, discuss what they've heard, etc.

A big part of the deal is that they listen to whole albums rather than picking individual cuts. This is understandable when it comes to jazz, where you have a repertoire of pop and jazz standards that as a professional you are required to know. You learn these tunes out of context and it is easy as a student of academic jazz to not absorb the social history behind the music, including the original albums some of the classic renditions appeared on.

My friend is just young enough to be on the cd rather than vinyl side of history, so he's listened to vinyl, but some of the guys he's hanging with are younger and pretty much just know iPods and "devices." Hence a real disconnect from listening through entire albums.

My source is a hard drive; haven't gotten into streaming, (well I do have a Spotify account for professional reasons), but I still listen to entire albums. With digital it is easier to bop from one tune to another, but sitting down and doing some serious listening still happens on a regular basis.

Maybe the point of this is that younger folks are looking for a way to get more deeply into the music, or find a way to share experiences. I do remember those times of hanging out with a few friends and cranking the stereo...heard some great music that way.

Leo Kottke!

Very cool.

Most of the folk I listen to is not the singer/songwriter stuff but rather traditional Irish / Scottish / English folk songs.

I am very fond of bands like STEELEYE SPAN and FAIRPORT CONVENTION.

Also number of Canadian folk artists like Cedric Smith, Margaret Christl, Ian Robb, etc whose LPS never came out on CD.

I saw Steeleye Span in 1972; they opened for Procol Harum at the John Carroll University Gym.

I asked the guy who owned the only "adult" guitar store here how he felt about Kottke's playing and he replied that he couldn't tell because he didn't play any songs. The reason Circle Round the Sun isn't on cd is because Leo hates it. It's been a perennial fave of mine.

I got to play some folk, actually old time for the first time last summer. Pretty fun playing with no power hum under some trees on a festival path!

Did you ever hear of the Indian Creek Delta Boys, from Southern Illinois? Gary and Terry Harrison tore it up on real Midwest style fiddle and flat top stuff. Once again I don't know my folk, but these guys were from a small town I spent a lot of time in...my brother was a friend of theirs and I would sometimes just get to hang around them. They went on to become quite known in their particular field, so to say.

I was turned on to Steeleye Span on these very pages, thanks again Jeff, as always!

I have shared this on the forum before. Here I am trying to do something in the style of STEELEYE SPAN.

I am also playing my 1991 JG 610 on this track.

Thanks for the kind words!

It was recorded on an 16 track analog 1" tape recorder around 1995. From memory I think I am playing two of the electric guitar parts, both with the 610 which at the time was the only RIC I owned.

I posted this to the forum back in 2009. Also the track ended up on the third RRF CD...

After all these years I can't recall. It was a big machine that sat on the floor. A pile of cables and wires went into it from the mixing board!

ReVox is sticking in my mind... but hey that could just be a fragment of bogus memory.

I 'm not sure Revox made a 16 track 1" machine, not too many did. Most 16 track recorders used 2" tape. Tascam, and possibly Otari, come to mind.
