Is there an outboard compressor that sounds as good as the one in
the Roger McGuinn 370/12RM model 12-string?

I like the sound of the JangleBox.

What are the best strings and gauges to use on a Rickenbacker 12-string?

Pyramid Gold The Ultimate 12-String Set. Pure Nickel Flat Wire Wound Strings with Silver-Plated Plain Strings. Gauges are .010/.010 , .013/.013 , .010/.020w , .013/.030 , .020w/.035 . .030/.0465 $36.00 each. They are expensive, but these 12-String sets have the best sound and last many times longer than traditional strings.

A little confused by your post, but I surmise you were trying to quote people and answer some (very old) questions.

Yes, the JangleBox is super super SUPER close to the E1.

But those Pyramid strings,, god, no. I hear they've gotten less stiff in recent years, but the go-to seems to be TI Flats for NOT ruining your guitar's neck. A lot of people turned their Rick 12's into archery tools using those Pyramids in the late 90's and early 00's. I think I only ever used them on a 660/12 with a baseball bat neck so I got lucky... folks with vintage ones, not so much!

McGuinn keeps his 12 string tuned to e flat.

Pyramid strings will damage the guitar - R tails just can't take that level of tension.

Older is not always best! (Unless we are talking about girlfriends!!)

Why would this be on Roger Mcguinn's web site?

IIRC, I've seen older posts about Pyramid strings and newer posts recommending TI strings here.

Maybe because his website needs to be updated? And as posted before, he keeps his Rick tuned down a half step.

And here's another vote for TI Jazz Flats.

Yeah, a lot of stuff on McGuinn's website hasn't been updated in MANY many years. Remember, he was one of the first guys doing music stuff on the internet, so it's not like it's only been around 10 years. I was regularly visiting his site 20 years ago IIRC.

For anyone who wants to build and experiment with their own compressor, you might be interested in this. Years ago, I made a stereo expander based on the NE570 chip. It worked pretty good. I never tried making a compressor with it, but it might work good for that.

I didnt even know Danelectro strings existed, but given the "quality" of their other products I would avoid.

In my opinion, it really doesn't pay to try to be thrifty regarding guitar strings. The TI Jazz flat 12 string set is quite admittedly, pretty expensive as these things go. However...they last a long time and depending on how much you play, they can last many, many months. I once had a set on for better than a year. I kid you not! I only changed them out when I broke the .010 octave G string.

I thought I'd give them I try. I can put them on my practice guitars. I'll have to get a set of TI strings sometime.
