Actually...JEFF...I read much more 'dickish" things here. Watching that video was like being at Guitar Center on a Saturday. The tone was buried in distortion, and the repetitive riffing was boring. RIC decided who was worthy of having three of these basses. I simply voiced an OPINION on that worthiness. If others would like to jump in and voice their opinions about my opinion, then that is their right as well.

I don't think it has anything to do with "worthy" - like his "music" or not, the guy made a deal with RIC to custom make three basses for him. They didn't make them to give to someone "worthy" of them, but someone "wealthy" enough to pay for them. Nothin' wrong with that.

Not my kind of music, but I don't appreciate Mötorhead's music or Lemmy's tone either. So, Dane, when you customized Rick basses for your customers, did you evaluate the customer's musical ability or tone before accepting the money?

I think that if you're going to use a 30" scale neck, the body should be smaller too. The proportions of these basses bug me. On a side note , I've never liked the bass & guitar playing the same riff. So I find it humorous that Death from above & Royal blood simply got rid of the guitar player. Still as a bass player, I wonder if the Royal Blood pedalboard dance would be worth the increase in pay you get from downsizing the band.

Your opinion (and others like it) are part of the reason I don't post on this forum anymore. This sanctimonious elitism is tiresome and benefits no one, at a time when we should be excited that RIC is making an effort to connect with bands that are actually still producing music, creating new instruments, and trying something different. Maybe RIC should set you up in the orders department, have buyers send you a video to determine if they're "worthy" of buying a Rickenbacker before they're allowed to finalize the purchase.

"Worthy" of it. Christ, do you read this when you type it?

And all this backlash over my OPINION is why myself and others seldom post here anymore. I liked the new RIC basses. I thought the weak playing buried in distortion was tedious at best to listen to. Meanwhile in another thread it's perfectly okay to attack Vincent Gallo about his opinion on something as well. "Sanctimonious elitism"? Just using that term makes you a "sanctimonious elitest"....

While the scale of these basses is 30", the neck blank is the same as a standard 4003 (which is why it has 24 frets), therefore the "footprint" of the bass is the same as a regular 4003. That the tailpiece is 3 1/4" closer to the neck looks odd, but doesn't change the proportions of the bass' shape at all.

And its sold for 2750!

That is a gorgeous instrument, real 21st centry. The swirled inlays are really set off by the homogenous black neck. Matte black hardware is a modern look. I especially like the way the space between the pickguard and edge of body is almost exactly the same the whole way around the curve. ALMOST!

Exactly. I thought this was a clever design move for them to get a 24-fret bass on the same basic template. (However, I do think a standard offering with redesigned proportions would be really cool.) Wasn't there a vintage 21-fret model that did something similar?

Yes, a few (we'll never know how many) 4001 basses from the '69-'71 period were made as 21-fretters. But they made the neck-through assembly about a ½" longer, moving the nut farther from the body. To make up for that (and maintain the 33.25" scale), they moved the bridge about ½" "up" the body. On some of these, the tailpiece seems close to the standard position, but I think that is just a factor of the "hand made" process. The position of the tailpiece bridge would have to be measured from the nut and not from the butt end of the neck-through assembly.
