I don't know, Something just feels off. Inlay size maybe?

Binding thickness by the jack?

It does look authentic to me but unusual. The two piece pickguard suggest that its an early 4003 but it also has a shedua strip (that actually looks like maple strip to me) that is indicative of the 4001.
It is possible the its just a late 4001 with a light shedua strip that has a replacement 2 piece pickguard.

Be advised he had it listed last week with a picture that shows wing separation by the bottom strap button

Actually that's a 2-piece maple neck, which was par for the course for early 4003s if I'm not mistaken. Glad that came back to current models.

Looks good to me. There is no shedua middle strip as the 4003 model does not have one.

Im not sure the original link above directs you to the same bass that was intended to comment on..
It looks like that bass was sold
Here's the bass that was originally posted and the one that I commented on

Looking at the pictures of the back you can clearly see that there is a seperating strip.

The only thing that looks "off" to me is the lost insert on the neck pickup tone knob.

I wonder if that center strip is still Shedua? Interesting how, depending on the angle of the light, the strip looks closer to the darker tone we're used to (as in the last pic) as opposed to how light it looks in most of the other photos.
Very pretty speci-mine!

This has a three piece maple neck . Maple instead of shedua for the centre strip . I've seen photos of other late serial number 4001 basses like that , but this has the two piece guard of an early 4003 . It makes me wonder if the truss rods adjust from the headstock or the body . Very interesting transitional bass .
