Unusual Frying Pan

Post by allsignalmustpass »

Hello,

I'm looking for information about my Frying Pan, which is somewhat unusual. My best guess is that it was a casting reject that got used for experiments in the shop and was taken home by an employee. It has "Rickenbacker Electro" engraved on the headstock in a way I haven't seen on any other Frying Pans. There are no screw or rivet holes from where a headstock badge would have been attached. It has a long scale, non-ornate tuner plates, and the headstock appears to be solid. The case seems like other 30's cases I've seen for Frypans. Wide Horseshoe, 25" scale, black fret dots (but empty fret dit holes above the 12th fret). The bridge casting looks like an earlier version and it has a case back. There's a plugged 1/4" jack hole where it looks like they were experimenting with the position for the jack. It has hole for both volume and tone but the tone control kind of gets in the way. When I got the guitar it had just a volume knob installed. Anyone know anything about this one? Any theories?

Unusual Frying Pan

Most of the early Frying Pans and other 30s era Rics had the spelling Rickenbacher with the "H" on the headstock badge … and the "K" was only adapted later.

Thus, the spelling engraving with a "k" is inconsistent when you mention some other hardware and aspects reflective of early-issue or early versions … Something about that "k" doesn't quite add up with the early time-line scenario.
