Think I found something pretty special

Post by Fundles »

Hi all!
My name is Tyler and I've been meaning to post in this group for a while now, because I wanted to share/discuss something I came across about a year ago. I hope this is the correct place for this post, as I don't know that I want to sell them, and I'm not sure they need appraising, but they aren't doing anyone any favors sitting in my storage unit so thought I'd post them in here and get a discussion started. I purchased these about a year ago at an auction because I was thinking of building a studio at the time and figured they would provide a one of a kind sound. They came from an old African American guy from somewhere down here in the swamps of north florida and according to his wife, has had them since new. These were his babies. Check em out and let me know your thoughts, information, whatever. I've tried identifying the amp but can't seem to place it. I took them to a local guy here in Tallahassee, FL where we plugged in and tested them (they work great) but he suggested posting to a group like this before modifying or doing anything like that so here I am and here they are. Hope you enjoy!

I have a Rickenbacker book and your guitar is a post-war (WWII) Hawaiian Steel Guitar. There are photos with 6-and 7-string models. I see your guitar has 8 strings; there are no photos of an 8-string.... It's too late for me to go reading through this chapter of the book now. You can search on the internet; made in 1949-1950s, it seems.

My book is strictly about guitars and their evolution. I have nothing about amps.

I'm sure all your stuff has value, maybe significant value - I have no idea. But if you change/alter anything, they won't be in original condition and therefore less valuable.

Cool pieces, congrats. Get the new Martin book on Ricks - it's excellent.

YouTube demo of a six-string version very similar to yours (mainly, headstock/truss rod cover differ). This is a "B6" -- yours could be a "B8."

Here's an "image" of an 8-string, supposedly from Elderly Instruments, although no RICs steels are in stock now:

Check RIC's History section. Here's something:
