Do you mean the knobs are on the lap side of the instrument. I guess that means it won't slide off your lap to the left side. (smiley face)

The "thumb nuts" (knurl nuts), springs, etc ... are similar to any prewar ... except they are underneath and work in reverse.
The backside is some kinda "fiberboard". Its removable ... held to the cast aluminum via screws.
The #10-32 pup mounting screws are headless and are fixed into threaded "blind holes" ...
Then the springs ... then the mounting plate (the big 1.5" aluminum ones) ... then the thumb nut.

I am a newbie and also wondering what would be a good starting point for under $500? I do not know anything about 8 or 10 string slides. So I probably will be starting with a 6 string lap slide. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you, Randy
