1964 4001 pickup ready to re-plate

The pickup on Andy's '64 Maurice Gibb bass looks the same also.

Kinda strange. It almost looks like its a tray that could hold a plastic bobbin plate.

I find that the mounting screws easily strip the bobbin holes. Maybe that is why Rickenbacker switched to resin board as the a bobbin material. The lip on those pickups is a little strange. Perhaps it aided the coil winding process or maybe it provides some stiffness and support to the bobbin plates. Plastic molders often use right angles to reinforce molded parts. Just a guess.

The magnets are out there if you know where to look.

Yes, the same as my 64's. There is a faint lip on the bobbin.

I got a mail from plating factory that the work is finished and shipped.
So the magnets arrives tomorrow or so.
After that, I must send them to another factory to re-gausse them!!

Atsushi, I hope this works out for you. I would be very concerned that the electro plating work would make the shoes difficult to re-gausse.
I hope I'm wrong...
BTW, I was told a long time ago that these bobbins were the same "blank" that was used on the same era Gibson P90. How true this is I don't know as I've never seen a P90 dis-assembled.

I already sent them to next factory to re-gausse.
It will finish in a few days after.
I can only wait till then...

Now my bass wears a pair of spare magnets like this.
They have little scratches but OK condition.
I can use for years, but I used to WANT to know the re-assenbling is possible or not!!

Atsushi, that bass is just incredible. It looks a little incomplete without the finger rest though! You should get one from Pickguardian.

Love the Vox amps too.

the finger-rest's screw hole is broken. So at first I must fix them and put finger-rest on it.

Cool job on the 'shoes, indeed, Atsushi. And very cool Rick bass, of course. You know, the likes of those never crop up in these parts (Lisbon). There are many used '70s 4001 and '80s 4003 basses about, but no '60s stuff whatsoever.

When you say the screw hole is broken, do you mean that the wood is stripped out or is the wood actually broken? If it is stripped, just plug it with a piece of wooden dowel and some wood glue. Drill a small pilot hole into the dowel before putting the screws back in. If the wood is broken and you have the pieces you may be able to glue them back together.
