Oh I've replaced a vintage nut with a new one before, besides the small gap between it and the TRC it'll work just fine for you...

What difference is there between the new 4003 volume adjustment knobs found on the 4003 and the knobs that are supposed to be on this 1973 4001 bass??

I can't seen to get a good view of them on 1973 basses. The ones I see resemble new knobs but I can't tell detail from the fotos.

With the Pup cover on, it looked as though the screws were turned out on a few of the positions. Once off, it does not appear that way although some don't seem as snug as others. Don't worry, I'm not turning any of them!

Long before the Internet and RickResource Forum, I found out the hard way about what happens if you turn those screws. I still have the parts of the pickup, so I can say with some certainty that the screws for the D and A string poles are just a little bit longer than those for the E and G, obviously to match the fretboard radius. As a result, the D and A screws look like they're turned out a little.

Exactly! The A & D poles are raised and that makes perfect sense to match the radius. Not to worry, I'm not turning thise screws. I love the sound that pick up gives!!

Found a set of real nice Wavy Grover's as well as a newer bridge assembly to swap out the older lifter one. Thanks to all that have assisted with these! Not too fear, I'm saving the older one as well. I think I may need a new nut since the strings sit so low in it. I'd like to find the correct thickness one in white so I have no gap between it and the TRC.

Someone here or a good luthier/repair person near you should be able to make a nut for you.

I actually had this done pretty recently. Most luthiers don't really use delrin, the material that was being used at the time for the white nuts. However just look up 'delrin sheet' on ebay and you can easily find a suitable piece that a luthier can cut a nut out of.
