With a typical rock band scenario, it also was not unusual for more than one instrument to be sharing a track on the basic. There were times when fixing a bad note on a bass track might also be wiping out the drums (or part of them) or a rhythm guitar that was also on that track. It can make punching in and out a real nightmare (or a more glaring mistake) and by the time it's done, you may have wasted up to an hour of expensive studio time trying to get it all to blend properly. I think that back in those days we were spending $100-$150 per hour for time in a decent studio. If you factor in inflation, that was pretty pricey time back then. For something like that, it would have been both easier and cheaper to re-cut another basic in three minutes than to try to fix that one, before building the rest of the song on top of it.

Chris also makes a mistake on the YTY version of "Why"...sounds kinda good though. :-)
