He must have a bad one as the ones I remember had a nice thick sound, the problem with them was as Jeffrey said they were really loud hey maybe didn't turn them up enough or set the sound right, also most people used Les Pauls or SG's with them back then, the 100 watt heads are more like 120, the SVT's are more like 350 watts. If you like the early 70's Stones such as 'Exile on Main St' with Mick Taylor you are listening to an all Ampeg band, VT-22's for Richards and VT-40's for Taylor with SVT's for Wyman. Get yer ya ya's out was all SVT's, great thick live sound.

Thanks, guys, for your posts in this thread. I've learned quite a bit about Ampegs and tubes.

V2's are also great sounding amps, the VT-40 Mick Taylor used was a V2 head in a 2 X 12 combo, a lower wattage VT-22 actually. The V2 originally came with a 4 X 12 cab.

I prefer to keep any and all Ampegs to bass use myself, but they sound ok for guitar I suppose. just not as good as my AC30!

Very different than AC-30's that's for sure. They were gritty and dirty sounding, great for loud, bluesy rock stuff.
