Dimple Circles on Pickups?

Post by joepee »

Can someone post of photo of what I should be looking for on a vintage toaster? What are these dimples people talk about?

So, unite Rick forumites, and show me your dimples!

Joe,

I don't have a pic handy, but what they're talking about are the 4 little circular indents(one in each corner) of the black portions on a toaster style pickup. They're mold impressions.

Thanks, Jeff.

Do you have to take the silver pickup cover off to see them? Or are they visible on a toaster with the cover on it?

Maybe someone can still post a photo.

Thanks!

The dimples are from mold knockout pins. They show as 3/16" diameter circles with a slightly different mold polishing direction than the rest of the black plastic of the toaster "slots". They are visible with the cover on.

look at the right edge in the black plastic, near the high E string - there are 4 'dimples' in all (in the corners)...

Also, not all 'vintage' pickups have these - only the early ones. I can't remember what years off hand...

The "dimpled" pickups were replaced by pickups non "dimpled" p/ups by Summer of '64. (and possibly as early as April of '64.)

John, if I am correct, the mold broke in April of '64 or so, and they used a transition type for a short time until a new mold was made. Is that right? If I remember correctly, the transition type had a cover over the pickup but under the metal cover.

Larry Wassgren had a couple of pickups like you are describing.

First off, thank you everyone.

I remember JH saying they even put the dimples on the 325c58, painstakingly so, to be authentic.

Wasn't sure what to look for. So, last night opened the case and checked. Sure enough...dimples!
