Rick sighting in an interesting place?

Has anybody picked up the most recent F**der catalog? The front cover is a photocollage of various brand users. . . . ppl like Keith Richards and Tom Petty.

Anyways, there's a pic of a 70's band that I don;t recognize immediately. If you look closely under the "nd" in http://www.fender.com (upper left corner) one of the guitarists has what looks like a 4xx Rick design. THe logo on the triangular truss rod cover of the mystery guitar looks suspisciously airbrushed or p-shopped out. NOt surprising, as it would be too inconvenient to have a major competitor's logo under your own on your own promotional material! Can anyone confirm or debunk this? Also, there's a good shot of a 400(1?) bass inside on page 42, in a vintage Kinks photo. A bit more understandable inside the catalog rather than on the front cover!

And btw don;t hit me, I got the catalog to check out amp specs.

Here's a link to a low-rez jpg of that part of the catalog, but it won;t help you ID the guitar. It's the real fuzzy vertical one under that part of the logo.

I can't I.D. the guitar, but the band is The Hives, and they only LOOK like they're from the 70's. They're one of the most popular of the current punk/garage sound bands. Their contemporaries include The Strokes, The White Stripes, and Division of Laura Lee. The Hives sound English/American. but hail from Sweden.

That's an Epi Crestwood from about 64-65, possibly without its pickguard or vibrato.

The bassist uses a 70s Fender Tele Bass, the second version with the big neck humbucker.

I agree Dave, I think we are talking about an Epiphone Crestwood here. Gibson/Epiphone pickups to be sure and it fits with the history of the Hives. Here is a recent photo of Vigilante Carlstroem of the Hives on stage with a model similar to the one in the photo cited above. One thing is for sure, it is no Rickenbacker.

John: I think this was a good question. It took us 24 hours to sort out so it wasn't a give away. A number of people have made the same observation that you did. Firstly was it a Rickenbacker and if not, what was it. It is a very good study in guitar forensics, especially when only a limited area of the instrument can be seen. Yes Pete Quaife's 4001 is a safe bet and a great Rickenbacker ad in a Fender catalog.

Hey, didn't Steve Marriott use one of those guitars when he was with Humble Pie? I thought I remembered seeing pics of him playing one on the Rockin' The Fillmore album...
