Mike; Hi.. gee really sorry for not answering this sooner. I apologize!
The wire in those is a stranded copper wire that's been tinned(Tinning is dipping the copper wire through a bath of solder. That makes it easier to solder the wire.)
I would not use anything larger than 20ga. wire as it would be a pain to work with. Solid core isn't used much in guitars as it's very stiff and difficult to work with. It can also be brittle and break very easily. Best to stick to stranded type wire. with wire runs being so short in guitars it's not as important on what type of wire but try to stick to what Ric used.
One question though..? Why do you think your guitar needs to be rewired? I've seen plenty of 40+ year old guitars with original wire that works just fine. Unless a previous owner has been in there and goofed things up then it's best just to leave well enough alone. The only guitars that I think need rewiring are new, pre-Fender era- Gretsches and some Gibson's(most Custom Shop and Historical Series though are fine).
