Dane, the tone controls, at least on 4001's and 3's are just treble controls, they don't cut the bass at all, for some reason they even seem to boost the bass a tiny bit when they are all the way off, but it is probably my imagination. I don't think a tone control on a 4000 would cut the bass at all either, if it did, that would be a very weird design.

Dedgoat, I noticed tha bid on the bridge on e-Bay.
It is not an authentic Rickenbacker part. It is an aftermarket replacement. Retract your bid while you can and come back from the edge! I may have an extra original brige and tailpiece I can sell you very soon. So hang on. It's a '79 unit that I've modified like the rest of my 4000 series bridges.

Hey, anyone know the answer to the original question on this thread? That is, how many 4000s were made in 1973, or a typical year's run from around then? I bought and am restoring the mutilated late-72 FG that was up on eBay a few weeks ago....

Seth: I know of no database online that will be able to answer this question. John Hall may have some idea, but I suspect he would have to go digging in his files first. John? Based on a very limited sample of about 1700 instruments, here are the data thus far.

Model - No. - Percent
4000 - 11 - 0.62
4001 - 347 - 19.70
4002 - 4 - 0.23
4003 - 159 - 9.03

Only about 4 in this INCOMPLETE and small sample are from 1970s.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Dane; FWIW, I made a sample black backed guard not long ago, thinking this would look better than std. black acrylic, and...well, after seeing it, I made one out of the already black acrylic, and IMNSHO, the solid black is the way to go. I have the black acrylic in stock as I write, as well as an actual 1963 4000 guard clone for a template. To date, I have never had a request for a 4000 guard from anyone. But if ya need one.....

Dedgoat, I have a 4000 series bridge and tailpiece assembly for sale. As with all of my Ricky bass tailpiece/bridge assemblies, I have modified them so that they actually work much better. If you're interested I'll send you pics and you can decide.
