Hi all,

Announcement (and official cat herding attempt  )!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Cal Minicon in the OC, Saturday January 24th, noon to 6 PM at Backline Rehearsal Studios in Garden Grove, CA.
Backline is located at:
7251 Garden Grove Blvd Garden Grove, CA 92841 - (714) 895-7345
http://www.backlinerehearsals.com/

We have the Showcase room, complete with P.A., drums, bass amp, and guitar amp. I'll bring at least one AC 30, along with my Ricks. :D

Our total cost is $150 for the six hour block. I couldn't get any longer than that unfortunately; a band's coming in at 6 PM.

The best deal I was able to negotiate was $25 for 6 hours, as opposed to the standard rate of $27/hr. They normally don't give breaks on Saturdays according to management, but they were willing to give me $2 off per hour, so our total cost is $150 for 6 hours.

As far as refreshments go, I imagine a civilized bunch such as ourselves can find ways to bring in what we want; I'm going to have a cooler there with some snacks. I always manage to smuggle in booze when I need to in a gig bag or something. So long as we're discreet, I don't think anyone will mind; we're not a bunch of teenagers...well, at least not on the outside anyway.

Here's the list I have so far:

Alison W
Collin Whitley +drummer buddy
Dane Wilder
Gary Clauson
Graham Griffiths (special out of town guest!)
Joey Vasco
Kenny Howes
Rich Ferguson
Scott Jehlik + drummer buddy

Me, plus (I hope) a couple of other Rick Nuts and a drummer buddy as well

All right, anyone else? Let me know!!! It would be great to see any and every local, or out of town forumite who can make it there in attendance! :D

Graham gets here Thursday IIRC, so I'll see if we can start working on some songs. Kenny, I think Joey and I would like to join you in some Cheap Trick songs this time. :D

They're letting Graham into the country again???? What's happened to your homeland security??

Damn!!! Wish I could be there but they probably wouldn't let me in anyways!! :P

Have fun all!

I guess we'll just have to find some restaurant to cause trouble at after 6 PM!

We need to bring up the dreaded subject of a Song List so that people having tabs for certain songs can provide them to those who want to learn the song ahead of time ...

Jeez. Rough us up why don't you!

Some of us will be getting together at my place next week to go over songs, so we'll even be slightly rehearsed!!!

Standards:
Beatles
Hard Day's Night
I Saw Her Standing there
Day Tripper
Words of Love
Please Please Me
Eight Days a Week
I Feel Fine
Probably anything that doesn't involve too many chord changes, which will likely cause a train wreck, caught on video of course, especially after a few drinks!

Byrds
Feel A whole Lot Better
Mr. Tambourine Man
Rock N' Roll Star
-Eight Miles High is probably not a good idea-who can do that solo?! And, how are the rest of supposed to follow that!

Who
Hmm, last time, Kenny said that "Subsitute's becoming the `Louie Louie' of Power Pop", so...
The Kids Are Alright
I Can See for Miles
Probably some other stuff off Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, or Quadrophenia-let's keep it simple, eh?

Other Stuff

Church
Under The Milky Way

Echo And The Bunnymen
The Killing Moon

Jam
In the City
Going Underground

Plimsouls
A Million Miles Away

I also thought playing songs by Alice Cooper, The Knack (My Sharona, of course :D ), and others, was pretty cool at the last minicon.

I'd like to attempt a couple of Cheap Trick Songs.

R.E.M. anyone?
Let's get it together! :D

Paul - how's about

R.E.M. "Man on the Moon"

Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" (and folks can take turns doing their best David Gilmour style solos ... )

Byrds "My Back Pages" if anyone can sing those complicated verses

Regards
Rich F.

* * * * * Forgot to mention

Another couple of good old Rickenbacker 12-string favorites are Greg Kihn Band "The Break Up Song" (They Don't Write 'em Like That) and Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly"
Both of them are pretty fundamental chord changes.... not too complicated
