Barnhill School 1965

Post by admin »

Here is The Wild Set playing Barnhill School, Saint John, N.B. in the spring of 1965. Left to right Gary Chase (Bass), Peter McCormack (Tenor Saxophone), Gregg Finley (Rhythm) and Jim Malcolm (drums). Here we are playing Bright Lights Big City, just about the only song we would let the drummer sing. He was ahead of Henley :)

We played often at this Junior High School and a good many nights the word got out that the boys in the hall were going to thump the band after the dance. It was often like the Can't Buy Me Love scene from A Hard Day's Night.

You can play sax, Peter? I'm really impressed.

How tall are you, Peter?
Or rather, how gigantic is the guitar player!

John: I am only 5' 8" and the rhythm player around 6 ' 2". So crouched down with the sax, I am close to Ewok.

Thanks Howard.

Sheena: Over the years I have moved to the Alto Saxophone which is like playing a recorder compared to the Tenor Saxophone. I must also add that I should be saying "play" the saxophone. Perhaps one day I will make a brief recording so that you can see what I mean. Nonetheless, it is almost as much fun as playing my Rickenbacker 12 string.

Thanks Jerry. I am with you. That was my guitar when I was not on the sax. It was a 1962. By the way, here is the scene of the crime. There was no tree in front back then.

Kira: We were the new kids on the block back then and some of the older bands saw the saxophone as something unique that they did not have. Sounding good may be something else entirely, however.

One thing is for sure, if you haven't lived it, it won't come out of your horn. :)

Pretty nifty, Peter! 1965? You were way ahead of me at that time in the musical department. In '65 I was still hoping to go to school with my shoes on the right feet.

What a great story Peter. You look so cool with that sax. Some DC5 songs must have been in the repetoire I would guess?
