Expanding McGuinn Picking

Post by jimk »

Here are a couple of licks over the ii7-V7-I chord changes I've been fooling around with lately. The idea is to play a scale passage using a higher note fretted on a lower string, and lower note an open string. Using a flat pick and two fingers as Roger does, you get some real nice bell-like tones if you're playing a 12 string guitar. The two examples are in the keys of D and E respectively. If this works out, and there's sufficient interest, I'll try to find similar licks in C, A, and G, as well.

I just spent about ten minutes working each one out. It's not easy at first, but makes a lot of sense when you think about wanting to make the 12-string a unique instrument, rather than simply using it as an extra trebley or chimey guitar.

Let me see if I can do a recording...

linky

Sorry it's not so good. I couldn't get the finger picking to sound good, so here's a quick and dirty audio clip with all flat picking. The mix of octaves and unisons is really nice. Excellent work, Jim. Sorry I butchered your tune!!!

That was pretty good, for just having figured it out. 8) Better than I could do. Yep, the 12-string is a whole nuther animal.

(and thanks for an easy download :) )

True confessions: It took me a while myself to get it down. The first one I figured out was the lick in E.
I've found similar licks in C, A, and G. I'll post those later if you like.
